Frequently Asked Questions

How many students are on a team?

  • There is a maximum of seven students on a team.  There can be less than seven.

When are practices?

  • It is up to each individual coach to decide when practices are held.  Most teams typically practice 1-2 times per week (for about 1-1/2 hours).  Sometimes this is increased closer to the competition time if the need arises.

Who can join?

  • Any student in the Muncy school district is welcome to join (Kindergarten through 12th grade).   Odyssey of the Mind even continues through the college level.

Is there a cost to join?

  • No, it doesn’t cost anything to join Odyssey of the Mind.  There are materials that may need to be purchased for the problem solution/skit, however it is up to the individual coach to decide if parents will help with the cost or if they will take care of it themselves.

How are teams formed?

  • Students are grouped together into teams of 7 or less by the coordinators in the district,  based primarily on grade level.  Primary teams consist of students in grades K-2, Division I teams are those students in grades 3-5, Division II consists of students in grades 6-8, etc.  If a parent requests that their children be placed on the same team, every effort will be made to make that happen.  If there are students from multiple divisions on a team, the team will be in the division of the oldest team member.

Where are practices held?

  • It is up to each individual coach to decide whether practices will be held at the school or an alternative location.

How are teams judged at the competition?

  • Many volunteers from around the area judge the competitions and serve in various positions to help make the tournaments a success. Teams are scored for their Long-Term problem solution and  “Style” (the elaboration of their long-term solution) and how well they solve a “spontaneous” problem on the spot. Teams compete within age divisions.

How are teams scored at the competition?  Each team is given a score out of 350 points:

  • 200 possible points for Long-term
    100 possible points for Spontaneous
    50 possible points for Style

What if there are not enough coaches?

  • We cannot have an Odyssey of the Mind program in Muncy without our valued coaches.  If there are not enough coaches we will have no choice but to turn students away.  (Click the link for “Coaches and Volunteers” if you are willing to consider coaching!  We need your help!)
