Dr. Graeme Mason
2024 Academic Hall of Fame Inductee
We are delighted to announce the newest member to the Muncy High School Academic Hall of Fame, Dr. Graeme Mason. Dr. Mason is being honored for his outstanding contributions to the fields of science, education, and research. A former student of Muncy High School, Dr. Mason graduated in the Class of 1982 before pursuing his higher education at Penn State University, where he majored in nuclear engineering with a minor in Spanish. During his time at Penn State, Dr. Mason also served as a Research Assistant at the Hershey Medical Center, graduating with honors in 1986.
Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Mason continued his academic journey at Yale University, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry in 1991. After completing his doctoral degree, Dr. Mason embarked on his professional career at Yale, starting as a Postdoctoral Research Associate until 1993, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Alabama at the Center for Nuclear Imaging Research until 1997. Since then, Dr. Mason has returned to Yale University School of Medicine, where he has remained a dedicated member of the faculty.
Over the past four decades at Yale, Dr. Mason has emerged as one of the nation’s leading researchers in his field. Dr. Mason is currently a Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging and of Psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine; Director Metabolic Modeling and Director Psychiatric MRS, Magnetic Resonance Research Center; Director, Neuroimaging Sciences Training Program, Radiology & Biomedical Imaging and Psychiatry; Chair, Magnetic Resonance Research Center Protocol Review Committee, Radiology and Biomedical Imaging.
Dr. Mason develops experimental models and methods for studies of brain metabolism using 1H and 13 C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mass Spectrometry in conjunction with 13C isotopic labeling in vivo, in cell preparations, and other systems. Dr. Mason studies metabolism and neurotransmission in the brain in vivo, including effects of psychiatric, neurological, and metabolic conditions. He examines healthy subjects and patients to investigate relationships among GABA, glutamate, and synthesis and release in the brain, regarding the effects of acute and chronic use of alcohol. He also studies detailed kinetic modeling of isotopomer and isotopologues using data from high resolution NMR and mass spectrometry.
Dr. Mason’s contributions, including his research, awards, honors, and teaching experiences, are extensive and highly esteemed within the academic community. Muncy High School is proud to call Dr. Mason a graduate and he has made us all cognizant of what a student in a small school can achieve. It is our sincere hope that Dr. Mason’s passion for science, education, and research was nurtured during his time at Muncy High School.
